The Nest/The Den

We have begun welcoming our new children into The Nest during these past few weeks ready to begin nursery in September. These settling in visits will consist of the children getting used to their new environment and adjusting to the nursery routine.

We are so proud of our newest children who have enjoyed exploring their new surroundings and buildings bonds with familar staff. It has been so lovely to spend time welcoming them and their families into our environment as we learn all about them.

Physical Development

The children spent time exploring the oats and paint brushes, creating various strokes and marks. They demonstrated good hand control by holding the brush in a whole hand grasp to move it through the oats. Some children use their hands to scoop up the oats, letting them sprinkle from a height and observing it’s decent back into the tray.

The children engaged in a paint activity involving farm animals, demonstrating good fine motor skills by moving the animals within the paint. Some children vocalised animal sounds, saying “moo” and “baa” to identify cow and sheep. When prompted with “stomp stomp”, they were making the animals stomp on the paper. The children then observed and pointed to the footprints created by the aninals, smiling in recognition. Some children demonstrated enjoyment in feeling the sensation of the paint between their fingers as they rubbed their painty hands together!

The children explored an upside down colander threaded with pipe cleaners. They reached out using their pincer grip to hold the pipe cleaner intentionally pulling the pipe cleaner out, maintaining focus on the object for several moments, as this supported the children’s fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

The children exhibited strong engagement in the pom-pom dropping activity, demonstrating a clear understanding of object permanence as they eagerly pushed the pom-poms through the holes in the box. This activity significantly contributed to the development of their fine motor skills.

Outdoor play

The continued sunny weather has allowed our children to spend periods of time accessing the garden this week, playing on bikes and developing their gross motor skills.

We all had a lovely time enjoying our snack in the garden. The children all sat so nicely together enjoying the company of one another.
