Characteristics of Effective Learning

This week our focus song has been “Walking in the Jungle”. The children have explored a range of sensory based activities that has supported their overall development.

The children enjoyed exploring the jungle small world area with animals, foam blocks, sensory bottles and sensory mats. There was lots of enjoyment, lovely interactions and engagement coming from the children, as they were fully engrossed in what they were doing.

Physical Development

The children engaged in exploration with the balls, trying to navigate the string obstacle. They demonstrated skillful manipulation, reaching into the basket and retrieving the balls while maintaining control around the string. Their interactions were positive and engaging as they passed the balls to one another.

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the various textured sensory trays. Some squealed with excitement, clapping their hands. They explored the textures of foam, rice, gloup, and water with their hands. Intently, they observed the foam, squeezing it between their fingers. The children splashed their hands in the water, using their whole body for support.

Communication and Language

The children engaged with play dough, jungle animals, and wooden tools, exhibiting fine motor skills. They demonstrated hand control by manipulating the animals within the play dough. Whole hand grasps were used to hold and move the wooden sticks, further exploring the play dough.

During the song, new words like “stomp,” “shiny,” “bumpy,” “roar,” and “snap” were introduced to the children. Some children attempted to imitate these words as we sang.
