2-3: The Discovery Hub

Play and exploring

This week we continue to see children’s interest develop in the Discovery Hub. The children are showing a lovely interest with the home corner. We are observing some lovely explorations as the children are beginning to act out home experiences such as making and serving food for others. The dolls are a popular choice with the children as they explore wrapping the dolls in blankets and putting nappies onto the dolls.

We added chalkboards to the writing area this week and the children have shown great curiosity with them. The children have explored creating exploratory marks with the chalk, creating patterns of horizontal and vertical lines, circular marks and wiggly lines.

Outdoor learning

The weather this week has been ever changing and this has prompted lovely discussions with the children discussing the rain, sun, warm weather and cold weather. We have been exploring in the Side Garden and Blossom Garden this week. The children continue to enjoy exploring creating marks with the water and brushes on the wall.

The children’s imagination skills are developing as they have created lovely collaborative play creating ice creams for each other and staff. Using language such as

“what would you like?”

“here you chocolate ice cream”

“money please”

In the Blossom Garden, the children have been exploring rolling the balls down the guttering. They worked together to collect all of the balls to repeat the action. Some of the children experimented trying to roll the ball up the guttering and commented “it come back” and “it was fast”.

Communication and Language

This week, our core book has been Spot at Nursery. The children have shown engagement with the book as we have made connections to our Nursery. We have discussed the areas within our Nursery and the resources we can explore with.

During our welcome times, we are beginning to introduce our self-registration photos with the children. We are modelling finding our photos to place onto the board. Following on from last week, the children are beginning to recognise each other’s photos and point to them within the group.

Parents as Partners

Mark making is such an important development of children’s fine and gross motor skills. At home, there are many ways to explore mark making such as with pencils, chalks, paints and water. Even a tray with some flour to explore using their fingers to create marks. We would love to see any mark making opportunities from home through parent observations (please see attached).
