Active Learning

Our class text this week has been the story Topsy and Tim go to the Doctors. We followed this interest by taking part in some exciting STEM activities, where we discussed the important roles of doctors and pharmacists in our community.

As part of this learning, we introduced a vital discussion around medication and safety aspects, helping the children understand how medicines help us feel better but must always be handled safely by adults. The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and roleplaying as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.

We embraced our roles as real pharmacists, developing our fine motor skills and early maths skills. The children worked hard to make different types of medication using playdough, sort the ‘medications’ into matching categories and use large tweezers to carefully pick up and manipulate the items, strengthening their hand-eye coordination and precision.

Susan’s group had a wonderful time this week! One of the children mentioned that he had tried tie-dyeing a T-shirt at home. This caused a lot of excitement among the children and inspired us to do our very own tie-dyeing activity. Everyone got incredibly creative – what fun we had!

Rhyme of the Week: Humpty Dumpty

Our Rhyme of the Week was the classic Humpty Dumpty. We had a fantastic time singing the rhyme together and working with our friends to order the pictures so we could sing along together.

We put our fine motor skills to the test once again by putting Humpty Dumpty back together again, showing concentration as we carefully attached his arms, legs, and other features to rebuild him!

Exploring the Magic of Autumn

We have also been continuing with our Autumn activities and closely observing the beautiful seasonal changes taking place all around us. The children were so excited to bring in their very own autumn treasures found near their homes. We brought these lovely natural materials out into our garden to create beautiful, imaginative transient art.

Using our treasures, we also had a wonderful time rolling paint-dipped conkers across paper to explore mark-making and create super abstract artwork! The children also enjoyed threading and weaving their autumn finds using our outdoor weaving frames, painting sticks, and decorating leaves with pens.

We stayed active outside by working our large muscles to sweep up the leaves while searching for even more autumn treasures. Finally, we discovered some brilliantly wonky vegetables while exploring our allotment and garden, which caused lots of laughter! We enjoyed sorting them by size, colour, and type, and we even used them to print with paint and explore different shapes.
