Investigation Hub and Discovery Hub at Deckham

Throughout the week we have been carrying out activities relating to some of our favourite familiar stories, in celebration of World Book Day, which was on Thursday 5th March.

It was fantastic to see your costumes and cosy pyjamas on Thursday as we enjoyed lots of lovely stories together.

During group times, the Investigation Hub children have been retelling some of our previous core stories using story props and puppets. They did very well at remembering and using some of the key repeated phrases, such as ‘We can’t go over it, we can’t go under it, we’ll have to go through it,’ when retelling the story, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

The children have also been re-telling the story ‘The Gruffalo’ and making up their own stories using a small world scene, as they move the characters around.

The children explored using clay and play dough to create representations of story characters.

“It’s a gruffalo. That’s his purple prickles. He needs two big teeth”.

Some children described the clay as “sticky” and “wet” as they handled and shaped it.

The children also explored another malleable materials as they scooped and shaped play foam, pretending to make ‘owl ice cream’ with foam and feathers inspired by the story ‘The Gruffalo’. They demonstrated great social skills as they handed over ice creams to friends and adults to pretend to eat!

Another enjoyable way in which we experienced the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ was to go for a sensory walk through materials representing each of the locations in the story, including water to represent the ‘deep, cold river’ and cold pretend snow for the ‘swirling, whirling snowstorm’! We looked out for any signs of a bear, on our way!

This week in the Sensory Hub we have been learning about animals, from dinosaurs to farm animals. The children have shown a great interest in ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and have enjoyed reading the book and feeding the caterpillar! The children have used a good range of mathematical language such as counting up to 10 and naming all of the fruit that they can see.
