The Discovery Hub
Characteristics of effective learning
(Playing and exploring)
This week the children have explored our dinosaur themed sensory tray with colourful rice, cornflour and weetabix. They experimented different ways in which they could make the textures move around the tray. Some children used their hands, others repeatedly banged the dinosaurs feet to make the rice jump / move. The children were able to identify their colours as they spoke about the different coloured dinosaurs and the textures they could see. They used vocabulary such as “Stomp, Rawr, Big, Little, ”.
We followed on from this interest by introducing a large scale paining activity which included the dinosaurs. The children made lots of marks by dipping the dinosaurs feet into the paint and pressing it on the paper. They observed the different shapes each one made. This also gave children the opportunity to use their hands to explore the texture of the paint, which they absolutely love to do!
